Rump steak with spiced onion rings


  • Spray the steaks with oil and cook on a preheated ridged grill (or BBQ) to the desired degree, seasoning once sealed and squeezing lemon juice over as the steaks cook. Remove and allow to rest.
  • At the same time, heat oil for deep-frying to 180°C.
  • Combine the flour, paprika, cumin and cracked pepper in a large bowl. Toss in the onion rings and then fry until golden, not overcrowding. Drain well on kitchen paper towels.
  • Serve the steaks with the onion rings and lemon wedges on the side.


  • 4 x 200 gm rump steaks
  • olive oil spray
  • sea salt & freshly ground pepper
  • 2 lemons (optional)
  • ¼ cup plain flour
  • 2 tspn paprika
  • 2 tspn ground cumin
  • 2 tspn cracked pepper with chilli or chilli powder
  • 2 onions, cut into thickish rings
  • vegetable oil
