Apple Betty

Method

  • Preheat oven to 180°C fan forced (200°C normal).
  • Cook the apples with half the butter and the white sugar in a heavy-bottomed pot until soft.
  • At the same time, melt the remaining butter in a pan, add the breadcrumbs and gently cook until crisp. Then add the brown sugar, mix well and briefly cook.
  • Layer the breadcrumbs and apple in a gratin dish, starting and finishing with the crumbs. Then cook in the oven for about 20 mins until golden brown.
  • Serve in individual bowls with a dollop of whipped cream and/or ice cream on top.

  • 6 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored & chopped
  • 100 gm unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp white sugar
  • 200 gm breadcrumbs made from day-old bread
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
